The three states are created out of the invisible and unborn Soul, the Self, which is present in the form of consciousness.
The three states are waking (Jagarath), dream(Swpan), and deep sleep (Shusupthi).
The one who is aware of the invisible substance withness of the three states mentally enters the state of oneness or the state of Advaita.
The gross waking experience is merged into the mental experience in the sense that, when it is analyzed, it is found to exist inseparably in and as the Soul alone. All spiritual planes are really mental: those who regard them as different or higher are deceiving themselves.
The dream becomes unreal when the waking takes place. Similarly, the waking becomes unreal when the wisdom dawns. Therefore, everything has to be grasped mentally, not argued on the intellectual point of view, which is limited to the form, time, and space.
The one that appears as waking or dream (duality) and disappears as deep sleep (nonduality is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness. Thus, all three states are nothing but an illusion created out of consciousness. Thus, consciousness alone is real and eternal.

To get freedom, no qualification is actually needed. It is possible to have the realization of the nondual truth here, in this very life.
The universe appears as waking, dream [duality], and disappears as deep sleep [nonduality]. Gaining the knowledge of the knower of the three states is the only way one can transcend the triad of states. To gain this knowledge by perfectly analysing the very states of dream and sleep in the waking state, to benefit from the states rather than becoming victims of the states.
A Gnani knows that the enjoyment of desires within the waking also is as unreal as in the dream, because he is fully aware that the Self is neither the waking entity, nor the dream entity, but the Self is the invisible Soul, which witnesses the three states.
Thus, the universe, which appears as waking or dream, is merely an illusion created out of consciousness, the invisible substance and witness of the three states.
The pain and pleasure are part of the waking or dream. The waking or dream is an object to the invisible Soul, the Self, which is present in the form of consciousness.
When awake, one should first picture to himself vividly what he has seen in a dream and then carefully and constantly think over the conditions of dreaming and wakefulness, and analyse and realize that the witness of the three states is invisible and a part.
The invisible witness has nothing to do with the individual experience happening within the illusory universe, which appears as waking or dream.
The dream entity and dream universe have nothing to do with the waking entity.
The waking entity and the waking universe have nothing to do with the dream entity.
In deep sleep, the invisible Soul, the Self, which is the witness, remains without the waking or dream experience.
In waking alone experience the waking entity is aware of the dream or deep sleep experiences, but the waking entity was absent in the dream or deep sleep.
One who is aware of the three states is neither the waking entity nor the dream entity because the deeper inquiry reveals that the Self is not physical, but the Self is the invisible Spirit or Soul or consciousness.
The one that witnesses the waking or dream is not the form, but it is the formless, because the form is limited to the waking or dream.
Thus, the witness is that which witnesses the waking or dream experience as a whole without the physical apparatus.
The seeker must observe deeply and find out the essential similarity between the dream and waking experience. He should realize that the witness of the three states is formless and apart. He should then give up the notion of the reality of the waking experience, same way he gives up the dream realities, when waking takes place, and cease to be attached to both waking and dream, by holding mentally the invisible Soul, the Self, which is the witness as real and eternal.:~ Santthosh Kumaar
